
The programme highlights the linkage between peace and security, economic growth and development, underscoring peace and security as enablers of development and prosperity in Africa. The thematic issues considered under this programme include:
- Conflict tracking, analysis, prognosis and strategic advise;
- Peace building and capacity building, training and advocacy;
- Security sector reforms and democratic control of security sectors and intelligence institutions.
- Analyzing and documenting the changing dynamics and intelligence sector reforms in the Great Lakes Region of Africa including offering professional support and Networking as a corporate member of Africa Security Sector Network (ASSN);
- Mediation and Peace Support Operations.
Our main projects in this area include addressing the challenges of disarmament in Karamoja.
Provide a supportive and facilitative role to Karamoja leadership to engage with the government and donors in order to leverage its policy, decision making and actions on disarmament and development in the region. This will be done through supportive participatory research, analysis, strategic advice, joint lobbying and advocacy. The strategies will be short-term, innovative and practical ways of reversing the current trend and approach towards disarmament and development in the region.
- To undertake research on African institutions, including the AU, NEPAD, regional economic organizations and how they impact on peace, security, governance and pro-poor economic advancement;
- To develop policy options to help advance the capacity of these institutions and member states to prevent and resolve conflicts and advance democratic governance and sustained broad based economic growth;
- To promote policy dialogue between African institutions, governments, civil society groups and academia through high-level policy forums and reports on topical issues such as politics of economic enslavement and how to undertake successful alternative livelihood initiatives at house hold and community levels..
Specifically, the programme addresses the following thematic issues:
- Accountability and probity
- Legalizing dissent
- Tracking trends and patterns of constitutional reforms and drawing implications on instability and economic progress.
- Electoral processes and Electoral law reform
- Politics of mass-economic enslavement and ways of promoting equitable wealth creation and poverty eradication among the majority poor families.
The regionalism and partnership program focuses on the processes towards building regional capacity for peace, security, democratic governance and Economic Integration, hinged on the emerging African regional institutions, including the African Union, the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and regional economic communities. The programme also focuses on Africa’s partnerships with international actors. Specific areas of focus include:
- African Union’s peace and security architecture and post conflict reconstruction mechanisms
- Security and humanitarian mechanisms of regional Economic Communities
- NEPAD – Post conflict recovery and the Africa Peer Review Mechanism
- EU- Partnership in peace and Governance
- UN-Peace building, Peace keeping missions and Africa’s role in the security Council
- Global South –China, India, Brazil and Africa.
The Institute is committed to promoting and organizing open and frank dialogues, convening inclusive and practically-based training sessions and workshops, and generating policy-oriented research on pressing challenges relating to peace and security, governance, democracy, human rights and sustainable socio-economic development.
To accomplish this agenda, the institute relies on a team of expert researchers and technical specialists as well as support from research networks with universities, research institutions, private sector practitioners and secondments from a wide array of donor partners.
